CSO- Requiem

On November 5 & 6, 2026 the CSO presents our annual “We Will Remember Them,” poignant Requiem concert honouring those who have served and sacrificed.

Special Requiem Mass in Context

🕯️ A Time-Capsule Masterpiece: Experience Mozart’s Requiem in its True, Sacred Home

There are plenty of places to hear Mozart’s legendary Requiem performed on a concert stage. But to truly understand its raw, emotional power, you have to experience it exactly the way Mozart intended: interwoven into the ancient, candlelit ritual of a Traditional Latin Mass.

This November, step out of the modern world and into the breathtaking sanctuary of the Holy Rosary Cathedral. We invite you to join us for an unforgettable, profoundly moving All Souls’ Day observance—where timeless artistry and centuries-old liturgy unite to honor those who have passed before us.

🏛️ Liturgy Meets Genius: The Way It Was Meant to Be Heard

When Mozart poured his final breaths into composing the Requiem, he wasn’t writing for a modern concert hall. He was writing for the soul. He designed these staggering choral lines and haunting orchestral textures to bounce off cathedral walls, hanging in the air alongside the scent of incense and the glow of candlelight.

On this special evening, you won’t just watch a performance—you will be entirely enveloped by it.

As the priest faces the high altar (ad orientem), the liturgy will unfold entirely in the reverent, contemplative beauty of Latin. Mozart’s explosive masterwork will seamlessly alternate with the haunting, ethereal beauty of ancient Gregorian chant, creating a seamless, meditative tapestry of sound that transcends time and space.

🙏 An Ancient Tradition of Remembrance and Hope

All Souls’ Day (the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed) is one of the most poignant milestones on the calendar. It is a dedicated space to pause, remember, and offer heartfelt prayers of remembrance, repentance, and fierce hope for eternal rest for our loved ones.

Whether you are regular churchgoer, a history lover, or a classical music enthusiast, the powerful fusion of this sacred, solemn liturgy and Mozart’s genius offers a rare moment of deep personal reflection and community connection.

🕯️ Mystery, Mastery, and Remembrance: Mozart’s Requiem Like You’ve Never Heard It Before

There is a reason Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem is considered one of the greatest musical achievements in human history. It wasn’t just his final masterpiece; it was a piece written under a shroud of cinematic mystery, composed on his very deathbed.

This fall, join the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra for an extraordinary, deeply moving evening of artistry and remembrance. We are bringing the full power of our orchestra and chorus together to dedicate this monumental work to the fallen—honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

🎭 The Dark Mystery Behind the Masterpiece

The story behind the music is just as gripping as the notes themselves. In the summer of 1791, a gaunt, anonymous stranger dressed in grey arrived at Mozart’s door, delivering a secret commission for a funeral mass.

Already battling a mysterious, fatal illness, a paranoid Mozart became convinced that he was being poisoned—and that he was actually writing a requiem for his own death. He passed away at just 35 years old, leaving the manuscript unfinished.

When you hear the explosive Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) or the heartbreakingly beautiful Lacrimosa (the very last movements Mozart ever penned), you aren’t just listening to classical music. You are hearing a genius pouring his final ounces of life, fear, and transcendent hope into the score.

🕊️ A Monumental Tribute to the Fallen

This performance goes far beyond a standard concert. It is a living, breathing tribute of remembrance and reverence.

The Requiem is a sonic journey that mirrors the human experience of grief, honor, and peace. It moves seamlessly between:

  • Thunderous, dramatic choral outbursts that shake the hall.

  • Intimate, soaring vocal quartets that feel like a private prayer.

  • Poignant, comforting harmonies that offer profound solace and reflection.

Through the timeless artistry of the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra, this concert will transcend time and space, creating a powerful moment for our community to gather, reflect, and connect as we honor the memory of those who left us too soon.
