On November 5 & 6, 2026 the CSO presents our annual “We Will Remember Them,” poignant Requiem concert honouring those who have served and sacrificed.

🕯️ Mystery, Mastery, and Remembrance: Mozart’s Requiem Like You’ve Never Heard It Before
There is a reason Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem is considered one of the greatest musical achievements in human history. It wasn’t just his final masterpiece; it was a piece written under a shroud of cinematic mystery, composed on his very deathbed.
This fall, join the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra for an extraordinary, deeply moving evening of artistry and remembrance. We are bringing the full power of our orchestra and chorus together to dedicate this monumental work to the fallen—honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
🎭 The Dark Mystery Behind the Masterpiece
The story behind the music is just as gripping as the notes themselves. In the summer of 1791, a gaunt, anonymous stranger dressed in grey arrived at Mozart’s door, delivering a secret commission for a funeral mass.
Already battling a mysterious, fatal illness, a paranoid Mozart became convinced that he was being poisoned—and that he was actually writing a requiem for his own death. He passed away at just 35 years old, leaving the manuscript unfinished.
When you hear the explosive Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) or the heartbreakingly beautiful Lacrimosa (the very last movements Mozart ever penned), you aren’t just listening to classical music. You are hearing a genius pouring his final ounces of life, fear, and transcendent hope into the score.
🕊️ A Monumental Tribute to the Fallen
This performance goes far beyond a standard concert. It is a living, breathing tribute of remembrance and reverence.
The Requiem is a sonic journey that mirrors the human experience of grief, honor, and peace. It moves seamlessly between:
-
Thunderous, dramatic choral outbursts that shake the hall.
-
Intimate, soaring vocal quartets that feel like a private prayer.
-
Poignant, comforting harmonies that offer profound solace and reflection.
Through the timeless artistry of the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra, this concert will transcend time and space, creating a powerful moment for our community to gather, reflect, and connect as we honor the memory of those who left us too soon.

Special Requiem Mass in Context
🕯️ Rest Eternal: Experience Mozart’s Requiem in its True Liturgical Context
There are many concert halls where one can hear Mozart’s legendary Requiem. But to truly enter into its profound theological depth, it must be experienced precisely as the composer intended: not as a performance for an audience, but as a sung prayer for the dead, completely interwoven into the solemn ritual of the Traditional Latin Mass.
On November 2, 2026, you are invited to step away from the distractions of the modern world and enter the sacred sanctuary of the Holy Rosary Cathedral. Join us for a profoundly reverent All Souls’ Day observance—the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed—where timeless sacred music and centuries-old liturgy unite to pray for the souls of those who have gone before us.
🏛️ Music as Liturgy: The Masterpiece in Context
When Mozart composed the Requiem, he was not writing a dramatic showpiece for applause. He was setting a sacred text to music to serve the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Hearing this work in context completely transforms the experience.
In a concert hall, the Requiem is sung straight through from beginning to end. In this sacred liturgy, the music is broken up and restored to its rightful home. It breathes alongside the ancient actions of the rite:
-
The Introit and Kyrie open the Mass as a plea for mercy.
-
The Dies Irae and Lacrimosa unfold as a profound meditation after the scriptural readings.
-
The Sanctus and Agnus Dei accompany the most solemn moments of consecration and communion at the altar.
As the priest offers the Mass ad orientem (facing the high altar, leading the faithful in prayer toward God), Mozart’s polyphony seamlessly alternates with the timeless, ethereal beauty of Gregorian chant. The music hangs in the air alongside the incense, functioning not as entertainment, but as a beautiful, continuous tapestry of intercession.
🙏 A Solemn Observance of Remembrance and Hope
All Souls’ Day is one of the most poignant and spiritually significant days on the liturgical calendar. It is a dedicated time of quiet contemplation, repentance, and fierce hope—a space where we offer our collective prayers for the faithful departed, trusting in God’s mercy for their eternal rest.
